A trip to a weekly market or a traditional Turkish Bath, sea kayaking or just lazing on a beach, whatever your interests, the Kalkan region of Turkey offers a wealth of wonderful experiences.
Car Hire and excursions and adventure activities can all be easily arranged and booked prior to departure from the UK. All fees are payable locally.
Hire a boat or join an organised trip to view the wonders of the sunken city of Kekova submerged beneath the crystal clear blue waters, feasting on freshly caught fish and shellfish cooked on an open bbq. Alternatively, enjoy a ‘lazy day' sunbathing, on a gulet cruising around the hidden bays along the local coast line, with regular swim and snorkelling stops to work up an appetite for the freshly prepared lunch and afternoon tea.
There are a number of beach clubs providing a free taxi ride or water taxi service. These are built into the rocks providing platforms for swimming, sunbathing and all the usual watersports, such as jet skis, waterskiing, banana/doughnut rides or just lounging around soaking up the sun enjoying the natural amphitheatre of mountain views circling around the bay.
Patara – 20 minutes drive from Kalkan and voted by The Sunday Times as one of the world's best beaches. Backed by ruins, including a Roman amphitheatre, home to nesting loggerhead turtles and the apparent birthplace of
St. Nicholas, Patara is a 12 mile slice of sandy heaven protected from development.
Kaputas – The most photographed beach in all of Turkey . Just 10 minutes away on the Kas road you round the bend and your eyes alight on the stunningly clear turquoise blue waters of this beautiful cove.
Olu Deniz – A beautiful white beach on a spit set between sea and lagoon. A stunningly beautiful setting beneath steep cliffs, said to be the best parascending site in all of Europe .
Visit a nearby selection of some of the most famous historical and ancient sites at Patara, Xanthos and Tlos. Wander around 2,000 year old ruins, sit on the seats of ancient Roman amphitheatres and conjure up the images of the past. The best times for exploring the sites are usually in spring and autumn when the seasonal temperatures are more comfortable.
A cool refuge on hot summer days Saklikent is the longest and deepest gorge in Turkey, a breathtaking spectacular natural wonder. As one explores it is impossible to remain impassive to the majestic soaring canyon walls which rise to a height of 600m in places, the water eroded boulders and the sheer power of nature.

A large weekly market takes place every Thursday in Kalkan located nearby to the villa. As you browse amongst the stalls you will find a wonderfully colourful array of exotic dried fruit and spices, fresh organically produced fruit and vegetables and assortments of feta cheese and olives to delight the senses. If in search of jewellery, handbags, clothing and traditionally made souvenirs, there are a variety of stalls to satisfy the bargain hunter and, with a good degree of humour thrown in by the stallholders, enjoy improving those bartering skills!
Fethiye market is every Tuesday
Kas market is every Friday
Kalkan is a popular spot for diving due to the crystal clear waters and huge variety of marine life. Diving for the beginner can be taken on either a one day ‘try dive' or 4 day open water course acquiring a PADI Certificate. For the experienced diver there are islands, reefs and walls as well as a shipwreck or two to explore.
Water skiing, jet skiing, banana rides and doughnuts are all provided in and around Kalkan bay at the local beach clubs or from the harbour. For the more adventurous, try river kayaking at Saklikent Gorge, or out on the sea for a closer inspection of the sunken city at Kekova.
The best place to do this is at Olu Deniz with Sky Sports. Tandem jumps for the inexperienced with qualified instructors and highly professional attention to detail. The most breathtaking and thrilling way to arrive right on the beach front. Transport can be arranged.
Voted by The Sunday Times as one of the world's 10 greatest walks, explore the Lycian Way . It follows Greek and Roman roads and aquaducts along traditional nomad trails and existing tracks that link up to form a continuous route stretching over 530km. Part of this walk is right here on Kalkan's doorstep. Try a day's walking from Akbel to Patara via Delikkemer (16km) taking plenty of water and a picnic. Best time for this would be spring when the vegetation is lush and green.
With the mixture of mountains, forests, rivers and coastal areas, birds are well catered for! Amongst these are Bee Eaters, Buzzards, Golden Orioles, Yellow Headed Buntings, Rollers and the occasional Lesser Spotted Eagle. In Spring time the White Stork returns from its Southern African winter home.
